Cleaning and Restoring Ipe to Original Color

Ipe weathers to silver-grey if left unsealed. Some homeowners love the patina; others want the original olive-brown color back. Restoring Ipe to original color is doable but it's a real project — typically 2-4 days of work for a 500 sq ft deck. Here's the actual process and what to expect.

The two-step restoration approach

Restoring weathered Ipe involves two steps: removing the silvered surface layer (mechanical or chemical), then sealing with oil to lock in the restored color. The silvered layer is typically 1/64 to 1/32 inch deep — surprisingly shallow for how thoroughly it changes the wood's appearance. Once removed, the underlying wood is original color and ready to seal.

Mechanical restoration (sanding)

Sanding with 80-100 grit removes the silvered layer cleanly. Use a random-orbit sander, work with the grain, replace pads frequently (Ipe is hard on abrasives). Plan for 1.5-2 minutes per square foot of sanding time. After 80 grit, follow with 120 grit to smooth the surface and prepare for oil. Total time on a 500 sq ft deck: 12-20 hours of sanding labor. The wood looks completely fresh — pre-install color — when you finish.

Chemical restoration (brightening)

Wood brightener (oxalic-acid-based) is a less labor-intensive alternative. Apply per manufacturer instructions (usually mix and brush on, allow 15-30 minutes contact, scrub lightly, rinse thoroughly). Brightener removes the silvered layer chemically and brings back the underlying color. Less effective than sanding for heavily weathered surfaces, but excellent for moderately weathered surfaces with minimal physical degradation. Time: 4-6 hours plus drying for a 500 sq ft deck.

Sealing with oil

Once the silvered layer is removed and the wood is clean and dry (24+ hours after brightening), apply Penofin Hardwood, Messmer's UV Plus, or another premium hardwood oil. Apply with foam roller or pad applicator at the rate specified — typical coverage 250-300 sq ft per quart for the first coat. Allow 4-6 hours absorption, then apply second coat. Allow 24 hours before walking on. Total oil cost on 500 sq ft deck: $80-$160. Total combined materials cost (sanding + oil) on a 500 sq ft deck: $250-$500.

Maintenance after restoration

Restored Ipe holds color for 18-30 months depending on UV exposure. Reseal at the 18-24 month interval going forward — same product, similar application process, but no sanding needed (the color hasn't fully silvered yet). Skipping resealing once is fine; skipping twice usually means starting the restoration process over.

Questions homeowners ask

Cleaning and Restoring Ipe to Original Color — frequently asked

Should I hire a professional or DIY?
DIY is feasible if you have access to a quality random-orbit sander, time (~20 hours for sanding on a 500 sq ft deck), and tolerance for fine wood dust. Professional restoration runs $4-$8 per sq ft for sanding-and-seal, $1.50-$3.50 per sq ft for brightening-and-seal. For most LA homeowners, professional is faster and the result is more consistent.
Will restored Ipe look exactly like new?
Very close — the color matches original, the grain reads fresh. The most visible difference is at end-grain (board ends), where end-sealing during install creates slightly different absorption that doesn't fully match.
Can I restore parts of the deck (e.g., shaded areas) while leaving sun-exposed areas weathered?
You can, but the visual contrast is striking and rarely flattering. Better to either restore the entire deck or commit to weathered patina across the whole surface.
