Cumaru for LA outdoor builds

Cumaru is the answer for 60% of our projects. It's harder than oak, denser than mahogany, naturally insect- and decay-resistant, and finishes with a glassine grain that catches the LA light. It costs about half what Ipe does and lasts about half as long — but 25–35 years is a long time, and most homeowners aren't planning past that horizon. For premium hardwood at a price that doesn't require an estate budget, Cumaru is the answer.

Why we build with Cumaru

What Cumaru actually delivers in the field.

01

3,540 Janka — built for the long horizon.

Cumaru measures 3,540 on the Janka scale (oak runs 1290 for reference). That density is what gives Cumaru its 25–35-year lifespan in LA's climate without structural intervention.

02

Honey-amber to medium reddish-brown → Patinas to deep chestnut.

Day one, Cumaru reads as honey-amber to medium reddish-brown. Over time the color settles: patinas to deep chestnut, then to silver-grey if left unsealed. Oil annually for the first 3 years to hold the amber tone, then every 18–24 months.

03

Coastal-rated.

Cumaru handles salt-fog and marine air without compromise. UV tolerance is high — direct south-facing exposures don't accelerate degradation.
